    The Law *

    Compulsory Basic Training
    Must be completed by all learner riders before riding on the road using L-plates & is valid for 2 years

    A Motorcycle Theory Test
    Must be passed by everyone before carrying out a practical test

    A Practical Test
    You must prove that you can ride your machine safely on the road before riding on motorways, carrying pillions or removing your L-plates

    At 16 years old
    You can ride up to a 50cc restricted machine with L-plates, a provisional moped licence & a valid CBT certificate

    From 17 years old
    You can ride up to a 125cc machine with L-plates, a provisional motorcycle licence & a valid CBT certificate

    From 17 to 21 years of age
    You can ride up to a 33 bhp (25kW) machine by passing a CBT, theory test & practical test on a manual 125cc machine. After 2 years your licence is automatically upgraded to ride any size machine

    At 21 years of age & over
    You can ride any size machine after completing a CBT, theory test & practical test (commonly known as a Direct Access Course (DAS)
